What a $250,000 life insurance policy costs

The most commonly bought face amount, priced by age and sex from two published sources — and why almost everyone guesses six times too high.

Key takeaways

  • A $250,000 20-year term policy averages $28 a month for a 40-year-old woman and $35 for a man — the market-wide figure.
  • Shopping hard cuts that nearly in half: the cheapest-quotes average for the same 40-year-old man is $20.
  • Almost nobody believes those numbers. LIMRA found adults under 31 guess $1,200 a year for this exact policy, against roughly $192 in reality.
  • Price barely moves until 45, then accelerates. The male market average goes from $44 at 45 to $215 at 60.
  • A minor health issue is nearly free — about $3 a month at 40. Tobacco adds about $72.

Source. The published average at 25 sits slightly above the one at 30; premiums do not fall with age, so read everything below 35 as one price rather than a curve.

And the best-case view, averaging only the cheapest quotes on the market:

AgeFemaleMale
30$12$14
40$17$20
50$33$42
60$82$118
70$417$492

The shape matters more than any single row. From 20 to 40 the male market average moves by $13 a month; from 45 to 60 it moves by $171. Waiting before 45 costs very little. Waiting after 45 costs a great deal.

Why the two tables disagree

For a 40-year-old man the sources say $35 and $20 — a 75% gap, and neither is wrong. MoneyGeek averages thousands of quotes across the whole market; Forbes Advisor averages only the three cheapest it can find. One answers “what do people pay”, the other “what is available if you shop properly”.

A third figure lands between them. LIMRA asked American adults what a 20-year, $250,000 policy costs a healthy applicant: the median guess from under-31s was $1,200 a year, against roughly $192 in reality. That $192 is $16 a month — above Forbes’ $14 at 30, below MoneyGeek’s $23. Three independent methods, three answers within a few dollars of each other, and all about one sixth of what people assume.

Closing that gap is what underwriting does. A clean build, no nicotine and no medication history puts you in the rate classes the cheapest quotes come from; anything else moves you toward the average. If you are healthy, quote several carriers before accepting the first number. If you are not, the market average is the fairer expectation.

10, 20 or 30 years

Same $250,000, same 40-year-old non-smoker, three term lengths:

Term lengthFemale, 40Male, 40
10 years$22$26
20 years$28$35
30 years$48$61

Source: MoneyGeek, How Much Does a $250,000 Life Insurance Policy Cost?, updated 16 September 2026 — same study and methodology as the table above, so the three lengths are directly comparable. Source.

Read cheapest-first and you buy the ten-year policy, which is usually the wrong call. A 20-year term bought at 40 expires at 60 — and if the mortgage runs to 68, or a child is ten now, the cover ends while the obligation still stands. Replacing it at 60 costs $215 a month against the $61 the 30-year policy would have cost at 40: the short term saved $26 a month, then cost six times that afterwards.

The question is not which term is cheapest but which outlasts the thing you are covering. Work out the year the obligation ends, and buy past it. The full calculation, worked through.

Is $250,000 enough?

$250,000 is among the most commonly purchased face amounts, which is not the same as the right one. On the rule of ten to twelve times income, it is sized for someone earning $21,000 to $25,000 a year.

The better method: add the outstanding mortgage, other debt that would pass to your household, the annual income your family needs multiplied by the years until the youngest child is independent, and education if you intend to fund it — then subtract savings and any cover you hold through work. For a household with a $200,000 mortgage and $40,000 a year to replace for ten years, that is past $600,000 before education.

Where $250,000 does fit: a small or nearly-paid mortgage, a partner earning enough to carry the household, grown children, a specific debt to clear, or a top-up over employer cover. A single income supporting young children is not one of them.

$250,000 figures: MoneyGeek, How Much Does a $250,000 Life Insurance Policy Cost?, updated 16 September 2026. $500,000 figures: MoneyGeek, 20-Year Term Life Insurance Rates, published 28 August 2026, an average of 248,399 quotes from 20 major insurers. Both are market-wide averages for 20-year level term, non-smoker, average build, but they are two separate studies with different quote pools — treat the comparison as close rather than exact.

Doubling the death benefit costs roughly 65% to 85% more, never a full 100%. For the 40-year-old man that is $24 a month for an additional quarter of a million dollars. Part of every premium pays for mortality risk and scales with cover; the rest pays for underwriting and administering the policy, and is charged once either way — you have already paid it by the time you buy the first $250,000. What a $500,000 policy costs in full.

If you use tobacco

AgeNon-smoker — womenSmoker — womenNon-smoker — menSmoker — men
40$28$82$35$107
50$59$179$77$243

Source: MoneyGeek, How Much Does a $250,000 Life Insurance Policy Cost?, updated 16 September 2026 — averages drawn from thousands of quotes across more than 30 carriers, non-smoker of average height, health and weight. Source.

Tobacco roughly triples the premium at both ages. MoneyGeek puts the saving from reaching non-smoker rates at $648 a year for women and $864 for men at 40 — $12,960 and $17,280 across a full 20-year term, for the identical policy. Most carriers reclassify after 12 months with no nicotine, some require 24 or 36, and they differ on vaping and cigars. A rate class is set at application and never adjusts on its own, so the date you cross your carrier’s threshold is worth marking on a calendar and reapplying on.

If you have a health condition

This is the most underused figure on the page. At 40, moving from average health to poor health raises the 20-year $250,000 premium from $28 to $31 for women and from $35 to $38 for men — about $3 a month.

Source: MoneyGeek, How Much Does a $250,000 Life Insurance Policy Cost?, updated 16 September 2026 — figures apply to minor health issues such as elevated cholesterol or controlled high blood pressure. Source.

That is the entire penalty for conditions a large share of adults are carrying. Serious conditions are individually underwritten and can produce a table rating, a flat extra or a decline, which no published average covers honestly. But a treated, stable condition sits far closer to the standard rate than almost anyone expects — and people routinely rule themselves out without applying. See cover with diabetes.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a $250,000 life insurance policy per month?

For a 20-year term with no tobacco use, the market-wide average is $20–$23 a month at 30, $28–$35 at 40, $59–$77 at 50 and $157–$215 at 60, women lower and men higher (MoneyGeek, 16 September 2026). Averaging only the cheapest quotes on the market gives roughly $12–$14 at 30 and $17–$20 at 40 (Forbes Advisor, 22 June 2026).

Is $250,000 of life insurance enough?

The rule of ten to twelve times income sizes $250,000 for someone earning $21,000 to $25,000 a year. For a household with a mortgage and young children on a single income it is usually short. Add the mortgage balance, other debts, the income your family needs until the youngest child is independent, and education, then subtract savings and any cover held through work. See how much cover do I need.

Do I need a medical exam for $250,000?

Not necessarily. $250,000 sits well inside the no-exam limits several carriers publish, and some return a decision in minutes from health questions and database checks rather than a nurse visit. A fully underwritten application with an exam can still return a lower rate. See no medical exam life insurance.

Can I get $250,000 of cover at 60?

Yes — a 20-year term at 60 averages $157 a month for a woman and $215 for a man market-wide, or $82 and $118 at the cheapest end. A 10-year term costs considerably less at that age and is often the better fit if the obligation ends before 70. See cover for seniors over 70.
